For our most recent trial about the defendant who chased down the victim on the street and used the victim’s car Club in their fight and to break the van’s windows, the jury came back this morning and found the defendant not guilty of assault with a deadly weapon (I agree, cuz it really does sound like the two were just fighting each other), and guilty of vandalism with over $400 in damages (the victim produced a receipt from a car repair shop showing the repairs cost him $425.)
My bailiff said, “When the defendant’s mom asked him the night of the incident where he’s been, he told her he’d been clubbing.”
You have to admit that that line that he was “clubbing” is hilarious.
It was — after we finally got it. He didn’t say it with any introduction or anything. He just came back into the courtroom and offered, “When the defendant’s mom asked…” and the reporter and I were like, “Huh? Okay. Thanks for the info.” And then he went on to explain and then we got that he was making a joke.
Haha… that’s the worst. It ruins the joke when it gets to that point!
You and the reporter must’ve felt a little dumb, eh? It’s ok, I feel dumb all the time. 😉
What? Why would we feel dumb? It’s my bailiff who should feel dumb about having a bad set-up to a joke that caused the joke to fall flat. =P
I told quite a few people that joke and they thought it was just the funniest thing!
Hey I took that “are you going to hell” test and scored a 74. Patrick got 139.
How could you tell that joke to people? Wouldn’t you have had to give them the entire background on our case? So it was a gigantic setup for that last little line? My bailiff would like you. See if you can float to Norwalk the next time your judge goes on vacation.
I don’t recall what I got on the going to hell test. Maybe I should take it again.
Oh you just tell them a very short version of the story (the fight, how they were in court, etc.) and then say the punchline. You got a 66 I think on the Hell test and I was thinking “There’s no way I could have scored that much more than Cindy!” I’ve been wanting to call Bles up and see what she scores.
