The only reason I know today is Dragon Boat Festival Day is because my mother gave me a calendar that superimposes the Chinese lunar calendar over the Western calendar, and then she’d gone on various days and drawn little pictures of what the day is. For today, she drew little Chinese “dzong zi” (sticky rice with meat and veggies wrapped and steamed in a bamboo leaf) in the square. True to form, Mr. W and I are gonna have a pork and mushroom dzong zi each for lunch today.
My mommy’s so cute. Unfortunately, her cuteness is a necessity driven by the shameful fact that I’m nearly illiterate in Chinese so she needs to illustrate instead of deferring to the preprinted holidays designated in Chinese on the calendar.
you know, i am not a big fan of dzong zi. in fact, i refused to eat one this morning. how un-chinese of me!
I didn’t even realize today is the dragon boat festival day! And I’m literate in Chinese! Shame on me.
Damn, I’m craving for dzong zi now. Did your mommy make your lunch (dzong zi) today?
How can anyone not like dzong zi? I liked them so much even as a kid that an incident involving them inspired me to write about it as one of my creative writing assignments in college!
My mom did give me a couple of dzong zi, but the one we’re having for lunch, Mr. W and I bought as we happened by them at a Chinese grocery store over the weekend.
Dude.. my dentist is Chinese and she asked me what my scrub top said. It has chinese symbols on it (many of my scrub tops do).. and this particular one said “Good Health” in Chinese.. she said she would get lost in Chinatown and knows barely anything about China. I thought mayber her parents would teach her a few things or of course she would pick up some things from her parents … maybe she was adopted? I don’t know but I wasn’t about to get that personal with my dentist. Yet. Next appointment maybe. I am just way too nosy.
I went Chinese School (Saturdays on school months and weekdays during summer vacation) and it didn’t help that much. Cuz the moment the recess or class-over bell rings, all the kids revert to English. The only reason I got such high marks is because I’m always teacher’s pet. *batting eyelashes* Wait. I am Asian, so I don’t have very long curled eyelashes. *batting eyelids*
*batting eyelids*… now that is a laugh/snort. Hey they make Elizabeth Taylor eyelashes just for you!
Who? That fat perfume woman?
well I was specifically referring to her fake eyelashes silly.. i couldn’t think of anyone else that wears those things but just now I thought of Liza Minelli.. ooh ooh and zsa zsa gabor… Marilyn Monroe!
