What do you guys think of the name Lyra (lye-rah)? To me it has connotations of a lyre, that little Greek harp that you see angels playing on clouds (like that really happens, ha!), and of the word “lyrical,” like musical, poetic, graceful.
The other day Daughter said she’d been brainstorming girl names. I’d wanted Isabella since, like, elementary school, but thanks to the smashing success of the “Twilight” series, my Isabella will be one of 5 Bellas in every class growing up. Plus, my cousin Diana and her hubby Doug named their adorable little girl Elizabeth, and are calling her Elle for short. My Chinese-speaking relatives would have a hard time distinguishing “Elizabeth” from “Isabella,” and “Elle” and “Bell” would be too close, too. I don’t want to be accused of copying. Anyway, Daughter suggested Lilah. At first I immediately thought of the evil villainess Lila (Lilah?) from the WB series “Angel,” and didn’t like it. But we discussed it some more and I thought maybe changing the spelling to Lylah would make it prettier. Cuz you can do the fancy script “L” and trail it into the following long “y.” It’s potentially a pretty name. We ran it by Mr. W. He immediately said he didn’t like it. Why? “That’s that girl in ‘Angel.’ She’s a bitch!”
So I was sitting there just now, and suddenly remembered a very pretty girl I’d met once or twice in high school named Lyra. She was nice, funny and smart, too. AND I’d always liked her name.
Maybe I’ll have a Riley and a Lyra, which is cool in conjunction, too, cuz it’s almost like just switching the consonant sounds around.
Lyra sounds southern to me…probably because of the long “I”, right? I love the name. Of course when I meet her I may call her Lyra Elvira!! 🙂 I love rhyming.
Lila is my name of choice for my next girl, I love that name. I prefer the shorter i because it looks more balanced that way. The “y” somehow – to me – needs to be in a longer name or be at the beginning of a name. Otherwise, it looks like a big house on a tiny lot of land.
Lyra reminds me of the name of the little heroine in “His Dark Intentions” – super fun to read, by the way.
IMHO I think you should just go Riley either way.
It’s a good Irish name.
Flat Coke – well, it may be a moot point cuz I suggested Lyra to Mr. W when he got home yesterday and he made an arguably ugly face. I asked what was wrong with it, and he said it sounded too much like “Mayra.” ??? I guess with that argument, Cindy sounds too much like Mindy, and Riley sounds too much like Miley.
Idlehouse – Looks like I won’t be taking Lila, so your girl won’t have any competition for the name. 🙂 Not that it matters anyway; they’re gonna be a country-length apart. You know names that begin with “y”? I only know ethnic names like Ysenia or Ynez or something (the 2nd one is a street).
Never heard of the book. I may look into it.
Bat – I’ve been telling everyone “no” on Riley/Rylie. What if it’s a girl and she ends up kinda tomboyish and we’ve given her a tomboy name? This is why I won’t name a girl Ryan or Taylor. Besides, what if I name the girl Rylie and then I have a boy after? She would’ve taken his name. =P
You should name her Maggie. ha ha ha ha ha. Sorry. Too easy.
Naming is a challenge. I remember it well.
And for the record I think Lyra (if pronounced Lira) is lyrical and beautiful!!!
i agree w/ maggie. i think it is unique. butit only matters if u like it.
so I should ignore Mr. W’s grumblings?
I like some unisex names, mainly the shorter versions–Alex (Alexandria) and Sam (Samantha) are my favorites. But I don’t like Tracey or Kelley for boys.
Ignore Mr. W’s grumblings at your own peril. He will refer to the child by some nickname if he doesn’t like the one you put on the birth certificate.
Flat Coke – HEY, I knew a Tracy (boy) in jr high! He was the TA for our flag football section. His name confused me, but he was SO cute! In a masculine way. He was probably the only person who could pull off a Tracy. (Maybe it was Tracey, I dunno.) What about Pat? 🙂
Bat – HAHAHA! “Hey, Josephine, get over here! Josephine!” “My name is Lyra, dad!”
Hello??? We already discussed this… *cough* VANESSA or JAYNESSA ;p My sis wanted to name her kid Lyrical or Lyric cuz she likes music. My other sis combined the 2 grandma names “Elizabeth” and “Isabell” turned into Lizelle. Maybe you can do something like that.
I don’t like giving a kid a name that already exists in the social circle. I think it creates confusion. Unless you don’t want to be my friend anymore. 🙁
I guess if I do a combined grandmother name, it’d be Shawces. Cool.
Yvonne is pretty common in my circle
oh that’s right…names like yvonne & yvette.
i agree with bat! i love the name rylie 🙂
and fwiw, i would have pronounced lyra as “lira”. if mr. w doesn’t like lyla, how about layla/leila? i’ve always thought that was a pretty name.
p.s. it really doesn’t matter what mr. w thinks right now. if you wait until right after the kid is born, can you EASILY pull the “i-just-carried-this-child-for-9-months-and-popped-her-out-of-an-opening-the-size-of-a-grape…so-i-get-final-say-on-this” card. you won’t even have to say it. it’s one of those unspoken things. trust me, it works. otherwise, i’d have a kid named tyler right now 😉
My friend Andrae suggested Leila this weekend. I said, “Like the song?” Andrae said, “Hey, it worked for Eric Clapton.” I’ll put it on the table.
I’ll remember your tip. 🙂 Did you ever say no to Tyler, and did Mike ever say no to Kyden?
yes, isn’t my advice always to ignore mr. w?
I think this is the first time it was this clear. haha
haaaaaaaaaaaaaaa
i said no to the name tyler all along because i have a couple of friends with kids named tyler AND a cousin named tyler, who coincidentally has the same birthday as kyden!
i think mike said no to the name kyden at first, but i didn’t care. did you know that i knew he’d come around. did you know that i pre-made his birth announcements with the name “Kyden Q.” all set? i just had to update the photo and birth stats and they were all ready to go to print 😛
I DID know you had the birth announcement cards pre-made. 🙂 And that you weren’t sure what the Q is for.
Okay, I guess I will throw in my two cents here. My grandmother’s name is Lillian, you could call here Lilly/Lillie.
I have always liked the name Kadence/Cadence. Also Delaney, which you can shorten to Layne/Laynie. Ok there are my two cents. 🙂
Lillian is pretty. Mr. W’s niece named her little girl Kaydence, which I’d always admired and I like the spelling, but I think naming mine the same-sounding name would be kinda awkward. Is Delaney a unisex name?
**clap clap** I LOVE Lilly! Sweet name.
By the way, my niece (due in June)is naming her boy Teddy. Cute! Makes you want to just grab him up and cuddle.
I proposed Lillian yesterday and Mr. W, although he held his tongue, wore a “veto” expression.
Teddy? Is it short for Theodore? It’s not a common name these days (which is a MUST for me that the name not be so mainstream that the kid’s gonna have half a class with his name in school).
love Lily.. little girl in Modern Family is little (adopted by the gay couple that i just LOVE.. so funny) she’s a thief though (and she’s only one) lol
Lyra… the little girl in the Golden Compass is Lyra.. smart / wise girl. They also pronounced Lye-Ruh.
I like Kennedie … Kenadie.. and some others that I’ll randomly text you for the next 7 and a 1/2 months
haha!
I checked with Mr. W — he DOES have THe Golden Compass. But he’s never seen it. He said he tried to watch it or read the book, but couldn’t get into it.
