2007 Formula Drift Championship Series Events
April 7, 2007
10a.m. – 6p.m.
THE FORMULA DRIFT CHAMPIONSHIP
Entering its third season, Formula Drift Championship, produced and owned by Irvine, Calif.-based Formula Drift, Inc., continues to expand into new markets as the first and only sanctioned and recognized North American professional drifting championship series (sanctioned by SCCA Pro Racing). This high-skilled, high-powered motor sport where drivers intentionally maneuver their cars into well executed, controlled sideways slides at high speeds through a marked course, has more than 50 professional drivers competing in all six competitions this year. A well established sport in Japan for more than a decade, Formula Drift, Inc. and its sister company Slipstream Global Marketing, Inc. had the vision and were instrumental in bringing the first official competition to the United States in 2003 at Irwindale Speedway. The unanticipated fan interest led to the rapid formation of the first ever, sanctioned and recognized drifting circuit, Formula Drift, which had its roots firmly grounded in Southern California, a hotbed for incoming Japanese-influence automotive trends. An important part of the program involves community outreach. Drivers and Formula D serve as the ambassador for the sport of drifting bringing exhibitions to traditional or mainstream motor sports events across the country which have included: Bridgestone Monterey Grand Prix/Champ Car Race, USAC, NASCAR Busch North & Featherlite Southwest and the SPEED World Challenge, among others.
In addition another 100-200 local team drivers will join in local markets to test their skills and techniques with the pros. Judged on execution and style, rather than who finishes the course in the fastest time, Drifting is a guaranteed crowd pleaser, and is often compared to the freestyle nature of skateboarding and motocross.
Drivers and Formula Drift also serves as ambassadors for the sport of drifting bringing exhibitions to traditional or mainstream motor sports events across the country which have included: Bridgestone Monterey Grand Prix/Champ Car Race, USAC, NASCAR Busch North & Featherlite Southwest and the SPEED World Challenge, among others.

I’m actually kind of excited! I’ve never seen a drift race before. Nascar was boring for me cuz all they do is go in circles, you don’t miss much even if you’re blinded the first hour by all the black tire dust flying into your eyes. But if this really IS like motocross and skateboarding, it’s going to be really interesting to watch. I hope Mr. W doesn’t get bored and want to go home early.
You could always wear something skimpy and jump up and down when you get excited and Mr. W won’t get bored and won’t want to leave early! See… problem solved! And they might hire you to be one of their models, too!
I think I need to have 10% less body fat to be a car race model. And I don’t think Mr. W is that easily swayed.
What’s funny is that at the Nascar race I’d been to, there’s a photo of me (yeah, in a sorta skimpy top) standing in front of the Navy car, and farther to the right side of the frame, this guy was caught in the photo gaping at me with his mouth open like he’d never seen an Asian before. (Nascar’s been a primarily white-fan-base event. I think I saw one other Asian person the entire other time I was there.) That was pretty funny.
Ok… then plan B. Tell him you are not wear underwear and bend over ever so often. If that doesn’t sway him, then I give up!
That totally does nothing for him. I go commando a lot.
What!? How can that not get his attention? See, he is so used to it, that he is taking it for granted.
I give up!!!
Same problem here–he sees it so much it doesn’t faze him when I walk into the room nekkid.
But I do hope you have fun at the race. Sounds like something I’d enjoy.
I think we may go to the Nashville auto show this weekend, it’s ALMOST something in common!! lol
Same here, Flat Coke. Hmm. Maybe we should cover up more. I used to be a Victoria’s Secret fiend, but I’m not even interested in lingerie anymore cuz Mr. W isn’t.
Ooh, a Formula-D Drift event! If you’ve never been to one before, you should definitely go! For the uninitiated, it’s not really a race as it doesn’t matter who gets to the end the fastest. It’s all about drifting style and crowd reaction. Drifting is basically getting your rear end out sideways before a corner and maintaining the “drift” through and after the corner. You’ll think they’re gonna crash for sure, but they’re usually under control, although they do crash frequently. Expect alot of noise, cars, smoke from burning tires, show cars, skimpy car models, and a young crowd. But nothing gets a crowd excited like a drifting exhibition.
This is nothing like NASCAR, Formula 1, or any type of auto race you’ve ever seen.
Most of the cars are japanese imports, souped up with alot of turbos, superchargers, body kits, etc. But there are a few domestic teams as well, also souped up.
And yes,the crowd is going to be very different than a typical NASCAR (redneck) event. Especially in LA, you’ll probably see at least 50% of the crowd is young asian males.
I’ve never been to formula D, but I have been to Nascar races… vroom vroom… they’re exciting…
TurboTiger – Wow, the audience sounds like my peeps from back in high school. Maybe I’ll get to feel 16 again.
Jordan – You thought Nascar was exciting? Like, all 3-4 hours of it?
