Since Allie’s been sick, she’s having a hard time breathing thru her nose, is horribly congested, & has a phlegmy-sounding cough. Newly added, she eats very little & pulls off the breast & bottle crying. I can’t get her to latch, so more often than not, one side gets uncomfortably engorged from her skipping it until the next meal. The nasal aspirator bulb can’t get to the mucus I hear messing with her breathing, the elevated mattress makes her slide down the crib when she kicks around, the shower steam & room humidifier may or may not be helping, I can’t tell. She took a long time to go to sleep last night after a long fit of crying when I couldn’t get her to relatch on the other side. I was angry to be so helpless & frustrated, & I’m trying not to freak out even now.
Me: I understand now the huge sacrifice you made when you decided you want to marry me.
Mr. W: And don’t you forget it.
Hi Cindy
Have you taken Allie to see her pediatrician yet? If not, you should at least check with them, making sure Allie does not have whooping cough. My son whose is 1 week younger than Allie, also had a cough 2 weeks ago. Although his cough was just a cold, his pediatrician still wanted to see him because he is too young, a cough could be dangerous. He didn’t nurse well and also vomited 2-3 times a day. The nasal aspirator bulb with saline drops helped a lot to suction out mucus. His cough lasted a week without any medications/ treatment. So don’t worry too much, just check with Allie’s doctor and if it’s a cold, let it run its course
I never had to use this, but I’ve heard parents swear by it… one mom said each time she uses this, her child’s nose is clear for 2-3 hours before she needed to repeat it

ooops, I forgot to include the link
also, if you don’t mind, can you tell me how you currently use the bulb aspirator? Maybe I can help
D – hi! congrats on your new son! I have taken Allie to the pediatrician, it was last week. She was diagnosed with upper respiratory infection due to a cold, and I was told that she just needs about 2 weeks to ride it out. She never got a fever, so maybe she just sounds worse than she is. She should be at the 1-wk point of the cold, and maybe 5 days of the cough. The cough just seems to be getting worse, though. 🙁
idlehouse – I had 3 or 4 other friends recommend that to me, too! I went to look for it online and couldn’t remember the name, so I did a search and found something similar that seems to be better, called Baby Comfy Nose. I ordered one already this weekend and it shipped this morning.
So currently, I squeeze the air out of the bulb, then hold it collapsed and put the tip as close to the rim of allie’s nostril as I can (which isn’t far and isn’t always a hit because she cries and squirms and bats my hand away). Then I release the bulb while still trying to hold the tip in place.
I try to get the tip in 1-2mm.
I learned this from some desperate father on the internet: pinch (or push down, you know what I mean) the other side of the nose while you are doing the suction on the remaining side. The baby will absolutely hate it, but all the snots will come out. It’ll really feel like a vacuum. My babe got used to it, thought she still complained.
Yes, I’ve tried that, too. I think her snot is just way back in her sinus cavity. Her nostrils are normally pretty clear-looking.
